Welcome to Wine Wednesday #4!
Today we are going to take a look at Pinot Noir, one of the classical red wine styles in the world. Pinot Noir is a lighter bodied red wine full of flavors like cherry, raspberry, oak, vanilla and spices. The best Pinot Noirs in the world come from regions like California, France, Oregon and Argentina. If you’re looking for something to pair with your favorite roasted chicken dish or a charcuterie board, go for Pinot. It also pairs really well with Thanksgiving foods like turkey and sweet potatoes.
I personally am a big fan of Pinot Noir as a year round easy drinking red. The style lends itself to being fruiter without compromising on a depth of flavor. My favorite region at the moment for Pinot Noir has to be Oregon, more specifically Pinots from the Willamette Valley. They have a certain earthy, dirtiness to them that create distinct layers of deep flavors only found in the terroir of the valley. The next region of wines I really want to dive head first into this next year is the home of Pinot Noir, Burgandy. Everything I hear about the classical styles from this appelation piques my interest and my taste buds. Tasting new wines in todays world can be just as good as visiting the place they come from in person. Through the bottle you can find out so much about the history of the land, the people and their cultures. It’s no wonder some wine drinkers call wine “Liquid history”.
