Celebrate Malbec World Day 2020 with these 5 Best Malbec Wines

Celebrate Malbec World Day 2020 on April 17th! Today, Argentina is a big name in the world’s wine industry. It’s the fifth largest producer of wine in the world, and welcomes visitors from all over the globe to explore its enotourism. This, however, was not always the case. Historically, the country was not known for the quality of its wine at all. Instead, Argentina produced wine that was largely consumed locally, with a massive 90% of its production staying within its borders.

In 1853, in an attempt to revolutionize the wine industry in Argentina (and switch the focus from quantity to quality), then-President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento collaborated with French soil expert Michel Aimé Pouget to bring new vines over to Argentina. From then on, wine quality began to flourish in the country, and Malbec became the star of the show.

Malbec World Day is celebrated on April 17th to commemorate the effort placed forward by the then-Argentinian President as well as to celebrate the success that Argentinian wine, specifically Malbec, has had throughout the world.

Today, Malbec from Argentina is increasing in popularity every day, certainly classifying as a heavy competitor in the industry, even outperforming Malbecs from their home country of France from time to time.

Just make sure to open up a bottle for yourself this April 17th to join in the celebration!

Here are our picks for the best Malbecs to enjoy this Malbec World Day 2020:

Luca Old Vine Malbec

This is a wonderful Malbec out of the Uco Valley in Mendoza, Argentina. On the nose, expect spice and black cherry cola, and some notes of cocoa as well. On the palate, you’ll get deep berry flavors and some nice acidity, as well as some hints of espresso at the end.

Strong flavors pair well with this wine, not to mention gamey meats like venison or a strong steak, and definitely strong cheeses as well.

Antucura Malbec

If lighter reds are more your speed, this is a great option in the world of Argentinian Malbecs. Much lighter on the palate than the previous, this option provides some ripe fruit flavors that punch right through from red apple to roses.

This wine pairs well with subtler flavors, and goes very well with a grilled tuna.

Catena Malbec

Somewhere in between the last two, this Malbec has a whole lot going on in the nose as well as on the palate. On the nose, ripe red and dark fruits are accompanied by some contrasting lavender notes, some hints of mocha and vanilla hidden in between it all. The wine fills your mouth completely with the taste of blue and blackberries on notes of cinnamon and leather.

Norton Reserva Malbec

This Malbec is an undisputed crowd pleaser and for good reason! The nose shares the strong flavors of plum, black cherry, and spice with some more delicate aromas of vanilla, lavender, and violets. The palate is oaky, smooth, with plenty of blackberry and spice. You’ll catch some hints of tobacco on the finish.

A nice, full flavor pairs well with this wine. A warm, slow cooked pulled pork is a great option.

Pascual Toso Malbec Reserve

This is a reliable, classic bottle of Malbec that anyone and everyone can enjoy. Lots of fruit and good, consistent tannins to enjoy with every sip.

This is a feel good wine that goes well with a feel good meal: a classic pasta or red meat.
