How to Celebrate Whiskey Sour Day

As Mark Twain once said, “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” Well, we’d have to agree! In honor of Whiskey Sour Day on August 25th, we’ve dedicated this entire article to… whiskey!

The Whiskey Sour isn’t just another cocktail, it’s a drink with class and pedigree. Rumor has it that the first mention of the drink was in an 1870 newspaper article in Wisconsin. Despite its recent reputation for being more of a “girly” drink, the Whiskey Sour has a history with officers and soldiers alike. It was known as the loyal companion to the rugged “manly man”.

One of the things we love most about whiskey is its staying power. You can open a nice bottle of whiskey and it will last you five years, while an unopened bottle can last decades. The Whiskey Sour has left a lasting impression too, as it’s easy to make and delicious to sip. All you need is a nice whiskey, citrus, and sugar.

While the base of the recipe stays the same, there are a handful of variations to try on…

The Stone Sour

The Stone Sour is a mix of Wild Turkey 101, squeezed lemon and orange juice, and a simple syrup. Fill your shaker with these ingredients and ice, give it a good toss, and garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry.

The Forbidden Sour

To make the Forbidden Sour, add pomegranate liqueur, bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup to your shaker. Mix well and garnish with a lemon wheel.

The Kilbeggan Secret Sour

The Kilbeggan is a combination of Irish whiskey, Vermouth, club soda, simple syrup, grapefruit juice, and a splash of orange bitters. To make: mix all of the ingredients in a shaker and vigorously shake until smooth. Add ice and a twist of lemon for garnish.

Whether you’re the “girly” fan or the “manly man”, if you love whiskey, you love a good Whiskey Sour. So, in honor of the holiday, make sure the pantry is stocked with your favorite whiskey and the fridge with some fresh citrus. Need a simple syrup? Check out this easy, homemade recipe here. Whichever variation you choose to enjoy, cheers!
