The History of Navasota, TX

The history of Navasota, TX starts with René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. He misdirected in his 1687 attempt to find the Mississippi River and return to French-controlled territory near the Great Lakes, passed through what would become Navasota. After numerous voyages, explorations of the Mississippi River valley, commercial activities, and several mutinies, La Salle’s remains are thought to have been deposited in the Navasota Valley.

Navasota was established in 1831 as a stagecoach stop known as “Nolansville” by European-American settlers. In 1858, it became Navasota, owing to the presence of nabatoto (“muddy water”) in the area.

Navasota became an essential shipping and marketing center for the region after the Houston and Texas Central Railway laid tracks through it on September 18, 1859. When Washington-on-the-Brazos, a nearby historic town, fought against railway development, it sacrificed its geographical advantage and began to deteriorate when many of its businesses and inhabitants relocated to the new railhead 7 miles (11 km) to the northeast across the Brazos River at Navasota.

Navasota was a Wild West boomtown in 1908, when “shootouts on the main street were so common that in two years at least a hundred men had died,” according to one source. Frank Hamer, then 24 years old and well-known Texas Ranger, was hired by the city marshal to enforce law and order. Hamer served as town marshal until 1911. In 1934, while serving as leader of the posse that tracked down and killed Bonnie and Clyde, he became more well known.

The City of Navasota, Texas, commissioned local sculptor Russell Cushman to create and design a statue of Frank Hamer for display in front of the city hall in 2012.
