When most people think of rum, they think of the Caribbean. But did you know that Texas has its own unique style of rum? In this article, we’ll explore the different types of rum Texans enjoy and how they differ from other rums.

Texas rum is made in a variety of ways, but the most common method is to age the rum in oak barrels. This gives the rum a unique flavor that is different from other types of rum. The aging process also helps to mellow out the harsh flavors of the alcohol. Texas rum is also made using column stills. This gives the rum a smoother flavor and makes it less likely to give you a hangover.

History of Rum

Rum has a long and colorful history in Texas. It was first brought over from the Caribbean by Spanish colonists in the 16th century, and it quickly became popular. Over time, rum production shifted from Spain to Jamaica, then to the Colonies of North America, and finally to Texas. The first rum distillery in the state was established in 1795, and since then the spirit has been popular in the Lone Star State. Today, there are dozens of rum distilleries in Texas, producing a variety of brands and styles.

Types of Rum

Rum is a spirit made from fermented sugarcane juice. There are many different types, each with its unique flavor and history. The most common types include light rum, dark rum, spiced rum, and aged rum. However, some enthusiasts speculate that there could be up to twenty different types and variations of rum on the market.

Light Rum

Light rum is a type of rum that has been distilled from sugar cane and molasses that has been reduced to less than 70% of its original volume.  It has a lower alcohol content than other rums, typically around 40 proof. This type of rum is generally not as strong in flavor as other rums and can be enjoyed on its own. White rums like Wray and Nephew rum and light rums are also often used in mixed drinks and are prevalent in the Caribbean.

Dark Rum

Dark rum is a type of rum that has been aged in barrels containing over 20% of pure alcohol. Dark rums are often used in mixed drinks and are also popular as sipping rum. Dark rum is a type of rum that is made solely from syrupy molasses. It is usually visually darker than white rum and has a much stronger flavor. Dark rums are typically used in cocktails because of their more robust flavor.

Aged Rum

Aged rum is a type of rum that has been aged in oak barrels for a while. Typically, it refers to any rum that has been aged in a barrel or container longer than the standard 12 years in oak barrels. This aging can be done at any time after the rum is distilled. Some rums are aged up to 20 years in barrels. Aged rums are usually smoother than younger rums and can have a more robust flavor. They are versatile, and while often used in cocktails, they can be enjoyed on their own or mixed with other flavors.

Spiced Rum

Captain Morgan spiced rum is usually added to wintery holiday drinks because of its warm nature. It is a type of rum made with spices such as allspice, ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom and is often used to make specialty cocktails or mixed drinks. Spiced rums can be made from any type of rum but are most commonly made from dark rums.
