Conroe, TX Geography

Conroe is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Montgomery County. The city of Conroe, TX is located at 30°19′N 95°32′W (30.3167, -95.5333), about 45 miles north of Houston. The elevation of the city ranges from 128 feet (39 m) above sea level at the Montgomery County Courthouse to 283 feet (87 m) near its eastern boundary with Grimes County. U.S. Highway 105 passes through the city east-west and State Highway 105A intersects it in the center of town; both highways lead south to Interstate 45 in Conroe and north to Huntsville.

Conroe is one of two principal cities in the Conroe-Montgomery-North Houston Metropolitan Statistical Area (formerly the Houston–Southeast Texas Combined Statistical Area), which as of July 1, 2009 is estimated to have a population of 2,072,451 people.

According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2010, Conroe has a total area of 34.8 square miles (90 km2), of which 34.7 square miles (90 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2), or 0.27%, is water.

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Conroe has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated “Cfa” on climate maps.

The History of Conroe, TX

Conroe, TX was founded around 1881 by W.F. Strong, who named it after his friend and business partner Colonel Isaac Conroe. The town of Conroe was founded in 1884 when the railroad came through. Conroe was incorporated in 1921.

The area around Conroe has been inhabited since at least 9200 BC; several ancient archeological sites map out habitation dating back at least six thousand years.

The 2019 U.S. Census recorded a population for Conroe of 91,079 people. Census estimates 31,030 households. The population density was 1,383.3 people per square mile (534.6/km²). There were 18,365 housing units at an average density of 547.8 per square mile (211.2/km²).

In the city, the population was spread out with 24% under the age of 18, 62.7% from 18 to 65, and 13.3% at 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 92 males.
