One of the first settlers to come to Arp was Jethro McGinnis who came from Tennessee. He built a log cabin that he shared with his children and other settlers. Arp was originally named “Prairie Depot” due to its location as a railroad stop (railroad depots were called “depot”, and since railroads typically passed through prairies rather than towns, there were often many depots located throughout the prairies). When postal service became available in 1895, the community decided to change its name and chose the name “Arp”, after resident and businessman G. W. Arps (1849-1914), an exceptional marksman who won numerous trophies during shooting exhibitions at local schuetzenfests (shooting competitions held by the local German American community).

Plans are underway to develop a “prairie depot” museum in Arp.
