    Liberty City is located at 32°27′5″N 94°56′34″W in Gregg County. The southern border of the region is formed by Interstate 20, which offers access from Exits 582 and 583.   • The History of Liberty City, TX

    Liberty City, Texas was founded before the Civil War. Mount Mariah and McCary’s Chapel were two churches that served the area, as well as a local family named Goforth. From 1902 to 1903, B. F. Chapman’s home served as a community post office called Hog Eye. He chose Hog Eye instead of Sabine, after the local school, because another post office was already using the name. According to legend, the name came from a local hog thief or a well-known fiddler’s tune.

    The name was altered to Liberty City during the oil boom of the early 1930s. In 1940, the community already had a community center, a school, a library, a church, and a store. The town’s population increased significantly after World War II, reaching 1,390 by 1978. In 1982, the town was formed. In 1990, Liberty City had a population of 1,607. The population increased to 1935 in 2000.
