    Oakwood is a city situated in Leon and Freestone counties in the Lone Star State.

    Oakwood, TX is located in northern Leon County at 31°35′5″N 95°51′2″W (31.584816, –95.850666). USGS topographic maps show the northern town limit following the line between Leon and Freestone counties, while census maps show it extending slightly north into Freestone County.

    The town is located on US Route 79, which runs East and West through it. Oakwood, TX is 18 miles south of Palestine, 3 miles west of the Trinity River, 30 miles northeast of Centerville, and 15 miles NE to Buffalo.

    According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Oakwood, TX has a total area of 1.13 square miles, all of it land.

  • The History of Oakwood, TX

    The name Oakwoods was chosen in 1872 as a waystation on the International-Great Northern Railroad, however the “s” was removed later. That same year, the town received a post office.

    The town was first located by a river, but due to flooding it had to be moved two miles west. In 1904, the town had a population of 542 people, which by 1925 had increased to 1,100 residents.

    When cotton crops first made it to the region, they were flat-boated down the Trinity River all the way to Houston and Galveston. Trains eventually made Oakwood into a shipping hub because of its good location.

    Because of the Boll Weevil infestation and the Great Depression, the population was severely depleted by 1931. There were under 900 residents which had shrunk to 400 by the 1970 census. In 1990 it peaked at 527.
