Palestine is located in Anderson County, Texas. Palestine is a tiny village in Texas’ Piney Woods, midway between Dallas and Houston, Texas, and Shreveport, Louisiana. It is notable for its natural surroundings, which include the dogwood bloom season, and for having 23 designated historic sites on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s also the western terminus of the Texas State Railroad, which is a steam-and-diesel railroad line.

The city is home to six interstate highways, several of which meet here. U.S. Highways 79, 84, and 287; as well as Texas State Highways 19 and 155 converge on Dallas. For the purpose of this article, I’ll define a city as any place in which a majority of its population resides. The city is divided into 19 different neighborhoods, each with its own distinct characteristics and culture. There are no official boundaries for these communities; rather, they are determined by neighborhood associations and individual interests. Officially, the city has an area of 19.6 square miles (50.7 km²), all of it land.

The construction of the Blackburn Crossing dam on the Neches River in 1962 resulted in the formation of Lake Palestine, a freshwater lake with an area of 25,600 acres and a length of 18 miles. It is home to a wide range of freshwater fish species including bass, crappie, and catfish, as well as various other types.

The History of Palestine, TX

The history of Palestine, TX can be traced back to 1843 when a trading post was established here and some settlers gathered around it. In 1846, the Texas Legislature assigned Palestine to serve as a seat for newly formed Anderson County. James R. Fulton, Johnston Shelton, and William Bigelow were engaged by Anderson County’s first commissioners to survey the surrounding area and make a site with a central courthouse square and 24 surrounding houses.

During the Reconstruction era, when the railway was built through here in the 1870s, growth, and timber trade were boosted. It had a population of more than 10,000 people by 1898.

The county’s fifth courthouse was completed in 1914, and it is still in use today. Nicholas J. Clayton founded Sacred Heart Church, which is one of the area’s many historical sites.

The earth-filled Blackburn Crossing Dam on the Upper Neches River, which formed Lake Palestine as a dependable source of water, was built in 1960 and finished in 1962. It was expanded from 1969 to 1972 when it rose to 75 feet tall and stretched 5,720 feet long.

Some of the debris found in and outside Palestine and other East Texas towns included much of the material from the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, in which seven astronauts perished. The NASA Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine (now called in honor of the shuttle crew) has conducted 1,700 high-altitude balloons for academic and research organizations.

On November 15, 2015, a man who was enraged over the loss of his family’s land went on a murderous rampage at a campsite several miles northwest of Palestine, resulting in the deaths of six people. The shooter was charged with capital murder and convicted by a Brazos County jury on November 15, 2017.
