The History of Wharton, TX

The Republic of Texas established the Caney Run mail route in 1838, passing through what is now known as Wharton. John and William Wharton were honored for their roles in the Anglo-American struggle for Texas independence. Stephen F. Austin’s original colonists settled the area as a plantation community along the Colorado River in 1846. In 1847, a post office was established.

Albert Horton, the state’s first lieutenant governor, was a pioneer. William Kincheloe and Virgil Stewart conducted the survey of the courthouse square, while William J. E. Heard did so for land on which it was built. From across the South poured in early settlers: Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, and Mississippi.

The region was originally used for farming, and enslaved African Americans were employed as field hands before the Civil War. Early crops included potatoes, cotton, corn, rice, and sugar cane, as well as cattle and molasses businesses. The town of Mungar runs on agriculture and oil. The community had a cottonseed oil mill, a sugar cane factory, gristmills, cotton gins, a milk processing plant and dairy, an ice plant, and various other industries at various times. Oil and sulfur production in the outlying regions contribute to Mungar’s economy.

In 1902, Wharton was formed. A major fire on December 30 of that year destroyed a number of frame commercial structures, as most of the structures were wooden construction. Afterward, businesspeople and city officials were convinced to use brick construction with fire walls for all buildings within the city limits and to establish a water system with fire hydrants.

In the 1980s, Horton Foote, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter and a descendant of Lieutenant Governor Horton, who was born and bred in Wharton, returned home and settled in Wharton.
