How to Make a Mojito

How to Make the Perfect Mojito

Yes, it’s true. We celebrate a lot of national holidays related to drinking, and National Mojito Day is no exception. This July 11th, stock up on your ingredients and “celebrate” the only way you know how… by learning how to make mojitos of course.

The mojito is actually a very easy drink to make – that and the rum make it a dangerous and delicious combination. Who’s complaining about that though? Not us! So, mojito fans, let’s get started! Here’s an easy “how-to” so that you can enjoy this drink at the end of a hot summer day, whether it is Mojito Day or not.

Mojito Ingredients

Part of the reason that learning how to make mojitos is so easy is because there are so few ingredients! All you need is rum, simple syrup, club soda, mint leaves, lime, and ice. Yeah, that’s it!

Simple Syrup

Simple syrup is a key ingredient to a lot of cocktails, and very simple – no pun intended – to make. That being said, we recommend you make a batch of your own and keep it on hand in the fridge for future cocktails! All you need is equal parts water and granulated sugar. Mix and heat the ingredients in a saucepan on low heat. Once the sugar has dissolved and the syrup thickened, strain and store in an airtight container.

For the perfect mojito drink, freshly squeezed limes are a must. Boycott the pre-made lime juice and squeeze those bad boys fresh. Pro tip: roll your limes on the countertop before slicing and squeezing to get all of the juices released. Note, you’ll need 1-2 limes per mojito.

Prepare your Glass

Grab your mint and muddle it at the bottom of your mojito glass. Get it mixed well enough so that the aroma of the mint is released. This is where the real flavor comes from. Next, add ice to your glass so that it can chill.

Mix it All Together

Add one jigger of rum (1.5 ounces), your lime juice, and a teaspoon of simple syrup to your prepared glass. Place your shaker on top of the glass with more ice and shake gently. Pour the mixture back into your chilled glass (strain if you want to remove large mint chunks), add a splash of club soda, and garnish with a mint sprig. Oh, and of course, enjoy it!

Now, imagine the perfect mojito in your hand… you’re sitting outside, the condensation from the glass is puddling on the table, and the crisp taste of mint and lime quenches your thirst with every sip. Ahh. Happy Mojito Day!
